Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Calvin Fabre

Software Architect and Founder @ Envoc

Serving as the President of Envoc (pronounced "invoke"), Calvin Fabre heads up a stellar team of now 22 employees developing applications aimed at helping businesses and individuals attain a "better reality". For over 10 years, Envoc has been writing software you can’t "buy off the shelf" and seeing a client’s brand from creation through consumption whether in web, print, media, corporate dashboards, portals, or mobile applications.

Calvin is a Southeastern Lion with a degree in Computer Science and started the company after moving his lawn mower out of his utility closet and forcing his wife to cut the grass. Calvin began his career writing software for offshore, deep-water oil rigs in harsh environments, working for "the-man" then, after saving up cash from side jobs, left the safety of the corporate shore and sailed into a sea of Entrepreneurial storms and heartaches and eventually joys and thrills.

His company Envoc has chosen not to participate in the economic recession.

Manuel F. Valencia is Vice President of Strategy at Lafayette-based Excelerant.

Manny is a graduate of Rutgers Business School and the MBA program at Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He is an expert in early-stage and fast-growth companies.

Manny is well-known for his community leadership as a board member at several community non-profit organizations like Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge, his participation as a founding member of Baton Rouge Entrepreneurship Week and his pioneering events in the cultural arts.

John Edel

John Edel is a patent attorney and managing member of Edel Patents LLC. He serves clients patent and intellectual property needs through preparation and prosecution of patent applications. Representative technologies areas include pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and mechanical devices.
As a former attorney for one of Louisiana’s largest law firms, John has experience assisting clients from solo inventors to the Fortune 500. John worked as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 2006 to 2007. Prior to his career as an attorney, he worked as a chemical engineer for Monsanto for three years. He is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Patent Bar of United States Patent and Trademark Office and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

Jennifer Fowler

LSU Student Incubator Director @ Louisiana Business & Technology Center

Jennifer Gatz Fowler is a Business Counselor and the Director of the LSU Student Incubator at the Louisiana Business & Technology Center. Fowler joined the LBTC in February of 2008 and brings a strong background in strategic planning, marketing, operations and consulting. She has a Masters in Business Administration from Tulane University and an undergraduate degree from Tulane in Business.

As a prior entrepreneur, Fowler brings firsthand knowledge to her clients of the day to day challenges every business owner faces, and a wealth of experience in how to meet those challenges.

Fowler designed, launched and manages the LSU Student Incubator, which has assisted over 115 LSU students with startup guidance during the 3 years of operation. Fowler is a Wendy Kennedy International Certified Coach and has completed the National Business Incubation Association’s Incubator Management Certificate Program.

Stephen St.Cyr

With over two decades of experience in the sign and graphics industry, the Slidell, Louisiana, native launched Vivid Ink Graphics in 1999, along with business partner, Collin Keller. The two entrepreneurs hoped to fill a need in the Baton Rouge area for a printing service that could offer a greater variety of products and services centered around large-scale graphics. Thirteen years later, Steve and Collin’s vision has not only been realized, but also expanded upon, as changing technologies have opened up new opportunities for innovative product and service offerings. St. Cyr’s ability to manage complex projects and his unwavering focus on client satisfaction have served him well in his role as our chief salesman and customer service representative. A member of AdFed, the Baton Rouge Rotary Club, and the Baton Rouge Ancient Athlete Society, Steve’s business expertise is equaled only by his passion for service to others, be it clients, employees, or the greater community.

Romalise M. Robertson

Romalise “Mel” Robertson is an experienced banker with over a decade in the industry. A standout relationship officer for Bank One, he went on to Hibernia National Bank, which later became part of Capital One, where he earned a promotion leading to his position as an Assistant Vice President for a Baton Rouge branch. In 2010, Robertson earned “The One Award,” recognizing his leadership in relationship banking.

As part of the ACCION Texas-Louisiana executive team, Robertson is Vice President of South Louisiana Lending Operations. He oversees South Louisiana management and performance of ACCION’s lending and business support services. Based in Baton Rouge, Robertson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with a concentration in Economics and a minor in Business Management from Southeastern Louisiana University. He is currently 36 hours from his MBA.

He is a member of the University of Phoenix Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. Also he is an active member and a part of the leadership core for New Life Christian Center.

Trey Godfrey

A native of Baton Rouge, Trey Godfrey is a graduate of Tulane University, where he earned a football scholarship, playing defensive back. During his career as a student athlete he was named to Tulane’s dean’s list, the National Dean’s List, the National Chancellor’s List, the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, and received player of the week honors. Following his graduation, Godfrey attended graduate school at Tulane, focusing his studies in the areas of social sciences and communications. While a full-time graduate student, Godfrey coached football at Tulane for nearly four years.
